Supreme Court to Hear Rahul Gandhi’s SIR Petition Today

Rahul Gandhi and the Supreme Court of India in a news-style illustration about the October 15, 2026 hearing on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleged voter deletions, election laws and demands for an independent audit.

The Supreme Court will hear Rahul Gandhi’s SIR petition on Thursday, 15 October 2026. The Leader of the Opposition wants the court to examine how the special intensive revision of electoral rolls was carried out.

The petition asks for a full disclosure of the “files, agendas, minutes, notings and objections” recorded by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The Hindu reports that the revision has so far deleted about 13 crore voters. Mr. Gandhi wants a judicial check on whether Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar acted arbitrarily and on his own.

## Who will hear the plea

A Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi is listed to hear the joint petition from Opposition leaders. The hearing had not produced an order when morning reports were filed. Do not treat a listing as a verdict.

A separate set of petitions is also before the court. People detained during the Delhi protests on 10, 11, and 12 October allege that police dragged, slapped, and assaulted them. They want an independent inquiry, preservation of CCTV and body-camera footage, and the return of their phones. On Tuesday the Union government said it was ready to argue but needed more time to refine its stand. Those pleas were adjourned.

## What happened on the streets

Wednesday was the fifth straight day of protests in central Delhi against the revision and against Mr. Kumar. The Hindu reported that protesters climbed barricades and that detention buses filled as hundreds came out. Those detentions are a police action. They are not, by themselves, a finding that the voter roll is unlawful.

The Opposition calls the revision “vote theft.” That is a charge. The Election Commission’s reply belongs in the court record, not in a headline that treats the charge as proved.

## What readers should watch

Wait for Thursday’s order before writing that the court has stopped the revision or forced the Chief Election Commissioner to resign. Neither outcome is known this morning.
