Virat Kohli has done it again. The batting maestro smashed a magnificent 139 not out against West Indies to become only the second batter in history — after Sachin Tendulkar — to score 15,000 runs in One Day Internationals.
THE MILESTONE INNINGS
In the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, Kohli was untouchable. His 139 not out came off just 88 balls, laced with 10 fours and 9 sixes.
It was his 55th ODI century and 86th international hundred. And with it, the 37-year-old — who now plays only ODIs — joined Tendulkar (18,426 runs) as the only members of the 15,000 ODI runs club.
Kohli reflected on his approach: "I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and play a gear to higher end, that was exciting for me to work on."
INDIA CRUISE TO VICTORY
India won the match by eight wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Captain Shubman Gill also shone with 110 off 108 balls, his 10th ODI century. He and Kohli added 151 runs together, powering India to their target of 296 in just 41.4 overs — with 50 balls to spare.
WEST INDIES FOUGHT HARD
West Indies had posted a competitive 295/7, powered by Justin Greaves' maiden century (101 off 108) and Amir Jangoo's unbeaten 58. But Kuldeep Yadav kept India in control with 4/40.
THE KOHLI LEGACY
At 37, having retired from Tests and T20Is, Kohli has poured his focus into the 50-over format — and the results are staggering. Standing beside Sachin Tendulkar in the record books is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest one-day batters the game has ever seen.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Another day, another record for Virat Kohli. As India lead the series 1-0, the King has once again reminded the cricketing world exactly why he belongs among the all-time greats.
