From a fiery threat at the United Nations to a golden triumph on the cricket field, here are the biggest stories the world is talking about today.
1. TRUMP THREATENS TO "ANNIHILATE" IRAN AT THE UN
President Donald Trump used his address to the UN General Assembly today to deliver a stark warning to Iran, seven months into the US-Iran war.
"Do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly?" he asked delegates, before predicting a peace deal would come after the US midterm elections on 3 November: "I believe we'll make a deal, right after the election."
Members of the Iranian and Cuban delegations walked out during his 35-minute speech. Trump also said his envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held a "very good" meeting with Iranian officials on the sidelines.
Reports suggest Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days — if the US lifts its oil blockade. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to address the UN tomorrow.
2. WORLD SPLITS OVER PALESTINE AT THE UN
The UN General Assembly was dominated by the Palestinian statehood question. Around ten more nations moved to recognise a Palestinian state, building on last year's wave that included the UK, France, Canada, and Australia.
In a dramatic moment, French President Emmanuel Macron directly rebuked Trump's Gaza peace plan: "Some boast of a supposed peace, but this peace hasn't reopened humanitarian routes for a single second. Must we stand by and watch this spectacle that shames us all?"
Turkey's President Erdogan called Gaza "the world's largest cemetery for children." India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will deliver India's statement on 26 September.
3. GOOGLE FINED €403 MILLION OVER LOCATION DATA
Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined Google €403 million (about $463 million) for how it processed users' location data — one of the largest privacy fines in Europe's history.
The six-year investigation covered three features — Web & App Activity, Location History, and Location Accuracy — between 2018 and 2020. Regulators found users "could lose control over their personal data," with data kept "longer than necessary."
Eight consumer groups across Europe had filed the complaints. Google says the case concerns "historical policies that have since been updated" and may appeal.
4. INDIA'S WOMEN WIN ASIAN GAMES CRICKET GOLD
India's women's cricket team defended its Asian Games title in stunning fashion today, crushing Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final in Japan — India's first gold of Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
India posted 216/3, the highest total in Asian Games women's cricket history. Smriti Mandhana led the charge with 79 off 45 balls — an innings that made her the first woman cricketer ever to reach 11,000 international runs. Richa Ghosh smashed 49 not out off just 22 balls, before Sri Lanka were bowled out for 69.
It's India's second straight Asian Games gold in women's cricket, and Sri Lanka's second final loss to India in just ten days.
5. MARKETS SLIP, GOLD SHINES, OIL FALLS
Indian stock markets snapped a four-day winning streak today. The Sensex closed down around 330 points, with the Nifty near 23,329, dragged lower by IT stocks after brokerages flagged caution ahead of quarterly results.
Meanwhile, gold held near record highs — around $4,300 an ounce — powered by record Chinese demand, even after the US Federal Reserve's recent rate hike.
Brent crude fell for a fourth straight session toward $98-101 a barrel, as Middle East diplomacy eased supply fears and Saudi Arabia prepared to restart its damaged East-West pipeline.
6. INDIA-US TRADE TALKS "MOVING FAST"
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India-US trade talks are "moving fast and in a good direction," even as India faces the threat of up to 100% tariffs under the Russia sanctions bill Trump signed on 18 September.
There was good news on trade: India's goods exports jumped over 15% year-on-year in early September, with the US remaining India's top export destination.
In markets, the National Stock Exchange's record ₹22,562-crore IPO — India's second-largest ever — was subscribed 5.71 times and is expected to list on 24 September.
