In a historic first, the Indian tricolour was hoisted successively across 54 Indian missions and posts around the world on India's 80th Independence Day (15 August 2026), through a landmark initiative called "Suryapath Tiranga" — the Global Flag Hoisting Relay organised by the Ministry of Culture as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign.
The relay began at 1:30 AM IST at the High Commission of India in Suva, Fiji, and concluded at 8:30 PM IST at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, United States. Following the path of the rising sun, the flag was hoisted across Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, Europe, Africa, and finally the Americas — creating a continuous 19-hour chain of ceremonies spanning six continents.
Officials described the initiative as "a remarkable chain of flag-hoisting ceremonies" that connected India's global diplomatic presence and diaspora in an unbroken celebration.
Suryapath Tiranga also marked the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram — the national song originally composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, which was formally granted legal status equal to the National Anthem earlier this year under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The initiative represents one of India's most ambitious symbolic exercises for Independence Day to date. Unlike traditional flag-hoisting events limited to a single time zone, Suryapath Tiranga leveraged India's diplomatic footprint of 190+ missions worldwide to create a globally coordinated performance of national identity — visible to Indian communities in Fiji, Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.
For the Indian diaspora — one of the largest in the world, with an estimated 32 million people of Indian origin spread across the globe — the relay was a powerful moment of shared identity. Videos and photos from missions in Kuala Lumpur, Nairobi, London, Moscow, and Toronto flooded social media through the day, forming a continuous digital celebration mirroring the physical relay.
The Ministry of Culture confirmed that the entire relay was tracked and broadcast digitally, allowing citizens in India and abroad to follow the flag's westward journey in real time.
Suryapath Tiranga was more than symbolism. It was, in effect, India signalling that its independence — 79 years old, celebrated as the 80th Independence Day — is not just a national event confined to Delhi's Red Fort. It is a global one, celebrated wherever the Indian tricolour flies.
