Delivering his 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on 15 August 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide sports talent hunt campaign — targeting children aged 5 to 15 years, with a specific focus on identifying and nurturing girls' sporting potential.
The PM said the initiative would be conducted "village to village, city to city, school to school," reflecting a grassroots approach designed to reach beyond urban centres and traditional sporting hubs.
The announcement is directly linked to India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games — with Ahmedabad the proposed host city. Modi emphasised that the Olympics currently feature around 40 sports and 325–350 individual events, most of which India does not contest competitively.
"We must prepare now for 2036," the Prime Minister said, framing the initiative as a decade-long national investment in athletic infrastructure and talent development.
The talent hunt is expected to build on the existing Khelo India programme and to feed into a specialised training and coaching pipeline for identified children. Modi's emphasis on girls' participation aligns with broader government policy focusing on female athletes, following India's successes at recent Commonwealth Games and Asian Games where women athletes have outperformed expectations.
At present, the initiative has been announced as a national campaign. The formally named scheme, the responsible ministry (expected to be the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports), and the detailed rollout plan are expected to be notified in the coming weeks.
Historically, India's Olympic performance has been driven by a handful of sports — hockey, wrestling, shooting, badminton, boxing, and track and field. Expanding into archery, gymnastics, equestrian, swimming, artistic sports, and combat disciplines will require sustained talent identification from a very young age — the exact gap this scheme aims to fill.
If executed at scale, this campaign could reshape India's Olympic ambitions well beyond 2036 — building a sporting culture that reaches every village school, not just elite academies.
