Assam Announces 8 New Sub-Districts on 80th Independence Day

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the creation of eight new sub-districts (co-districts / upa-jila) in the state, during his address on India's 80th Independence Day in Guwahati on 15 August 2026.

The new sub-districts are:

→ Kamalpur

→ Barhampur

→ Rangnadi

→ Chichibargaon

→ Chabua-Lahowal

→ Khumtai

→ Katigorah

→ Barkhola

With these additions, Assam now has 57 sub-districts — administrative units created below the district level to bring governance closer to citizens. The move is part of a broader effort by the Sarma government to decentralise administration and reduce the geographical distance between residents and government services.

The Chief Minister stated that the creation of these units aims to strengthen grassroots administration, expedite implementation of central and state schemes, and streamline access to public services for people living in remote areas.

Sub-districts serve as intermediary administrative bodies between the district and the block level. They handle land records, revenue collection, local dispute resolution, welfare scheme delivery, and coordination with village panchayats. Their creation typically results in shorter waiting times for citizens accessing government offices, and better monitoring of service delivery.

The announcement was made alongside a five-year infrastructure development plan totalling ₹1.5 lakh crore. Of this, ₹50,000 crore is expected to come from the state government, while ₹1 lakh crore is anticipated from the Centre. The plan is expected to focus on road connectivity, healthcare infrastructure, education facilities, and irrigation projects across Assam's rural and semi-urban regions.

For Assam — a state with vast geographical spread, complex terrain, and historically underserved districts in the Bodoland region, the Barak Valley, and upper Assam — this decentralisation carries real practical significance. Faster land record access. Quicker scheme implementation. Better disaster response coordination during floods.

The eight new sub-districts, once operational, will bring Assam significantly closer to its stated goal of "governance at the doorstep."
