That distinction matters more than it might sound. Physically destroying a satellite creates dangerous debris and escalates a conflict dramatically. Jamming one silences it without the political and physical consequences.

In modern warfare, position matters. A stationary weapon has predictable coverage. A mobile one can appear where it's least expected.

How Much Is Being Spent


The US Space Force has requested nearly $460 million in Fiscal Year 2027 to develop Meadowlands, support it, and train the personnel who will operate it.


For context, that's a substantial investment for a single system category — and a clear signal of where military priorities are shifting.

Why This Matters Now


Modern militaries run on satellites. GPS navigation, encrypted communications, missile guidance, real-time battlefield imagery, drone control — nearly all of it depends on space-based infrastructure.


Take away access to those satellites, and even the most advanced military becomes significantly weaker.


The Space Force has been open about this: capabilities like Meadowlands were central to the success of Operation Midnight Hammer — the June 2025 US military strikes on nuclear sites in Iran.


According to the Space Force, "electromagnetic warfare professionals successfully created a silence zone to ensure secure bomber ingress and egress, effectively halting adversary communications."


In plain English: they made the enemy blind and deaf during the exact moments American bombers needed to reach their targets and get out safely.

The Bigger Picture


General Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations, mentioned during the April 2026 Space Symposium that similar capabilities were used on day one of Operation Epic Fury — the current conflict with Iran.


"That's what it means to be a Guardian in today's Space Force," he said.


This is the quiet transformation of warfare. The battlefield isn't just land, sea, and air anymore. It's the invisible electromagnetic spectrum that flows between satellites and the ground below them.


Since 2019, the Space Force has been building what it calls "orbital warfare" capabilities. Meadowlands is the first one it has openly admitted to owning.
