Where Is It Right Now?


New Horizons is currently 5.9 billion miles (9.5 billion kilometres) from Earth — and speeding away from us at about 300 million miles per year.


It's in the Kuiper Belt, the icy ring of frozen objects that circles the outer solar system beyond Neptune. This is where our planetary neighbourhood ends and something far stranger begins.

What It Has Done So Far


New Horizons is not a new mission. It's a legend.


In 2015, it became the first and only spacecraft to fly by Pluto — the mission that gave humanity its first close-up images of the dwarf planet's heart-shaped icy plains.


In 2019, it went even further and studied Arrokoth, a strange snowman-shaped object 1 billion miles past Pluto. That remains the most distant object ever explored in our solar system.


Now it's about to try something even more important.




What It's About to Do


In three weeks, New Horizons will begin studying hydrogen in the outer heliosphere — the region where our Sun's influence starts to fade and true interstellar space begins.


The boundary between these two regions is called the "termination shock" — and it's one of the least understood zones in physics.


Only two spacecraft have ever crossed this boundary before: NASA's Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. But those probes were built in the 1970s. They don't have the sensitive instruments New Horizons carries today.


In plain terms: we're about to get our best data yet on where our solar system actually ends.

Why This Matters


For science: The data New Horizons is about to collect could reshape our understanding of how the Sun's influence extends into space, how solar wind behaves at extreme distances, and what actually happens at the edge of our cosmic neighbourhood.


For future missions: Every piece of information about deep space helps engineers build the next generation of interstellar probes. Without missions like New Horizons and Voyager, we wouldn't know how to survive out there — or what to expect.


For humanity's sense of scale: A 9-hour radio delay. Nearly 6 billion miles from home. A probe launched in 2006, still working, still exploring, still teaching us how little we know.


As New Horizons project scientist Pontus Brandt put it: "All these discoveries from pioneering missions like Voyager and New Horizons teach us how little we know about what lies beyond."


That might be the most honest sentence in modern space science.
