Mick Jagger has one regret from a lifetime in rock and roll — and it involves a piece of advice from John Lennon he wishes he had ignored.
Speaking on the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast, the 82-year-old Rolling Stones frontman revealed that he never met Elvis Presley — because Lennon told him not to.
What John Lennon Told Him
The story begins with The Beatles' first US tour in 1964.
During that visit, a British tabloid journalist arranged for The Beatles to meet Presley at his home in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. By most accounts, the meeting did not go the way Lennon had hoped. Elvis was not the same person Lennon had idolised growing up — and the encounter left him disappointed.
Lennon shared that disappointment with Jagger directly, and the lesson he passed on was simple: never meet your heroes.
"I remember John telling me, 'Yeah, you know, you should never meet your heroes. I would never meet Elvis, Mick, if I were you,'" Jagger recalled on the podcast.
The Decision Jagger Now Regrets
Jagger followed Lennon's advice — and has spent decades regretting it.
"And so I didn't. I took John's advice, which was really stupid of me, really. I mean, I would love to have met Elvis! Why did I take John's advice?" Jagger said.
Elvis Presley died in August 1977. By then, the window had closed — permanently.
Jagger reflected on the real reason he hesitated, beyond Lennon's warning: "I wanted to keep my Elvis to myself. My version of Elvis. I didn't want my version of Elvis shattered like John's was."
He added wistfully: "Maybe my Elvis version would've been different."
